Having gone through the college admissions process as a first generation student myself, it was overwhelming and stressful!
Nobody in my family had applied to undergrad in the United States, so I had to go through the whole process myself.
The college application process is complex and requires a lot of time, effort, and research.
However, navigating college admissions becomes a more manageable journey with the right tips and support.
Here’s what I did that helped me get into undergrad successfully!
Start Early and Research!
Starting early in the college admissions process as a first-generation student allows you more time to research and explore your college options.
The first step is knowing which college major you want to pursue and then picking which colleges align best with the programs and experience you are looking for.
Keeping track of college admission requirements, financial aid deadlines, and application requirements is vital.
It’s best to begin researching colleges during your junior year of high school.
This allows you ample time to prepare for standardized tests and complete other requirements such as letters of recommendation. You will also be giving yourself plenty of time for your college essays.
Seek Guidance
Reaching out to your college counselor, teachers, or mentors can be a valuable resource during the college admission process.
As a first-generation student navigating the college admissions process, I remember making meeting times for teachers I felt comfortable with to get their advice and guidance. Teachers and mentors want to help, and they are usually always open to assisting.
Your guidance counselor is another resource to help you with what colleges to apply to, essay writing, and financial aid options available.
Additionally, to get more insight, reach out to your high school alumni and even those you may know in college who can help you with the college apps. They also tend to be the ones to provide amazing insight into college apps and college advice in general.
Take Advantage of Resources
Many colleges offer resources specifically designed for first-generation students.
These resources provide personalized assistance, scholarship opportunities, and workshops.

College is an expensive investment, and many students cannot afford the full cost of tuition.
Financial aid was such a foreign topic with the college admissions process as a first generation.
It’s essential to understand the different types of financial aid options available, such as scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and loans.
First-generation students are eligible for specific kinds of financial aid; ensure you accurately understand how the process works by asking for help from the school guidance counselor, or other organizations.
Importance of the Personal Statement
Your personal statement is an essential aspect of your college application.
It’s your chance to share your unique story, and experiences and let the colleges know who you are.
Highlight your strengths, achievements, and how being a first-generation student has impacted your journey.
Make it genuine, opening your complete story and standing out from the other applicants.
